BAM, the sailboat that became a world-famous cases brand

For musicians nothing is more important than protecting their beloved instruments, so it is no surprise that a high quality cases firm like BAM cases became a world renowned brand, used by some of the most important international musicians. But maybe not everyone knows that BAM was born while its founder was trying to build a sailboat.

BAM has been producing the best instrument cases on the French Atlantic Coast for more than 40 years. 80,000 handmade cases are produced each year and cherished by musicians. The very beginnings are owed to a free-spirited French couple, Laurence and Philippe de Trogoff. More than 40 years ago Philippe wanted to build a sailboat and noticed that the materials he was experimenting with had exactly the right properties to make a case for his cherished guitar: lightweight, yet extremely durable.

The first prototype was built and became popular amongst his musician friends. This was followed by a patent application and the creation of the company with the name ‘BAM’, short for “Boîte-à-musique”, which translates to “music box”. This is how the current market leader in high-quality instrument cases was born. In 2011, I and Katja Goetz, two music industry experts, took over the business. It is now active on a global scale with its own distribution in the US, Brazil, Russia, and China. They brought fresh inspiration and impetus to the coast of Normandy while maintaining the unparalleled quality that is synonymous with the brand. When they took over BAM, most of the cases were only available in classic, dark colours. Progressively, newly designed collections have been launched on the market, where musicians can now choose from a wide variety of products, from traditional and stylish to trendy and colourful.

Cases are now available in a wide array of colours and patterns, made from state-of-the-art materials, and equipped with new features that are always developed in collaboration with musicians, since they are the ones who know what they need best.

BAM leaves nothing to chance when it comes to protecting instruments. The ultra-lightweight hard shell is made from a combination of Airex, PVC, and ABS plastic, and has been hand produced in a complex process since the very beginning on the coast of Normandy in Dives-sur-Mer, close to Deauville. The precise composition is naturally a strictly guarded company secret.

The case’s soft-touch locks close gently and quietly, and are covered with a special protective layer. The handles are durable and secure. Each feature is strictly controlled and regularly inspected. Superior quality is the result of a unique combination of many years of experience, innovation, state-of-the-art handmade precision, and constant advancement of the technical processes.
